A new symbol for Europe?

February 26, 2010

Would this be it? Could we keep always redesigning and compiling our visions for Europe? If the symbol was just the form, that could be freely gathered? Everyone would recognise that it is the symbol of Europe – stripped down to a blue surface and stars – how ever one would assemble the stars on the surface.

Embracing unity in diversity, the design invites views and revisioning, instead of offering a fixed model. The set of stars on a blue surface becomes a playground to redesign our visions for Europe. Compiled into one big flag are now those from Sibiu, ECC2007. The doormat symbolises a welcoming Europe; the stars depict hope in a common future. However assembled, together they form our Europe.

The flag has been entered into the contest, and at the same time, the idea of the shared form and space for revisioning Europe.

  1. This entry with all those designs from Sibiu, which are the core of the flag of the flags, is one of 1416 ideas for a new symbol for Europe!
The organisors expected 400 entries. They tell us on their webpage that designers from 63 countries including 33 countries outside of Europe took part. It’s a hard road to the top 12, but I’m glad we – with the people of Sibiu – are taking part. What a spring for the 13-strong international jury! “The final 12 symbols will be printed on 12 flags and will be shown from the 31st of May till the 6th of June during The Hague Design and Government.”
